Introduction

Airflow limitation in emphysema is usually progressive; thus daily activities may become very difficult as the condition gradually worsens. Consequently, the burden of chronic respiratory disease on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) tends to increase with lung disease severity. In addition, an impaired health status is a risk factor for frequent respiratory exacerbations. Moreover, the psychological burden of managing a chronic condition contributes to emotional distress, including anxiety and depression.

Objectives

The main objective is to determine HRQoL in a large population of patients with severe AATD (PiZZ, PISZ, PiSS and null variants) and to identify the variables with the greatest impact on HRQoL

Inclusion criteria

Individuals with phenotype/genotype Pi*ZZ, Pi*SZ and Pi*SS included in EARCO

Brief summary

  • Cross sectional design using the baseline data from the EARCO International registry
  • Sociodemographic and clinical data will be collected: medical history including Charlson score, treatments, previous exacerbations, AATD-related diseases, lung function tests, physical examination data, mMRC, CAT, BODE and BODEx, physical activity (minutes walked per day).
  • HRQoL data: EQ5D utility and VAS
  • A descriptive analysis will be performed. Comparisons of clinical, biomarkers and HRQoL will be performed using Chi square, T student and ANOVA tests. Finally linear regression models for the degree of HRQoL (EQ5D utility and VAS) will be carried out including the potential clinical related factors.
